How to unlock and root the Nexus 10
Although there is a simple root toolkit for the Nexus 10, we always stress the importance of unlocking and rooting your device the manual way. It gives you a better understanding of how things work, but we do understand why you might want to go the easy route. If you want to give it a go the old fashioned way, we’ve got you covered with all the necessary steps to unlock and root your Nexus 10. It’s actually pretty simple and in less then the time it takes to watch a sitcom you will be
Sega's Jet Set Radio is a half-gigabyte, $4.99, and available now
I'm not normally one to worry about the size of Android applications these days. Twenty megabytes? Download without thinking. Fifty? Sure. Why not?Sega's much-anticipated Jet Set Radio, however, clocks in at a whopping 587 megabytes. Not exactly a record or anything, but this sucker's big. Took about 8 minutes from download to first push. This game is worth the $4.99, though. If you're into the skate culture at all, you'll find something here. The premise, if you're new to the game, is that
Tip: Drive's Latest Update Adds Global 'Copy To Clipboard' Option In The Share Menu
When Google Drive was updated yesterday with the new native spreadsheet editor, all other aspects of the update were instantly less interesting. Now that the dust has settled and our excitement for the new editor has become more manageable, there's another nifty feature worth highlighting: the new "copy to clipboard" choice in the share menu. Now, when you choose to share something via the built-in option, you will see an option to "copy to clipboard" - it was actually a little confusing where

Google Nexus 10 review! [video]
Before we begin, a quick look back. There’s something about working with a new kind of device that helps you learn something about yourself. Android, as an operating system, is growing at a rapid pace and will mature from Jelly Bean and soon become a delicious Key Lime Pie; and there’s no doubt that with it, Google will be hoping to show us horizons of everyday tech that we didn’t even realize existed. With each release comes new features, and with new features come new experiences. But the
How to disable unwanted system apps and bloatware from your Android phone (Android 4.0 and up)
A very handy but underrated feature in Google’s Android 4.x operating system is the ability to disable apps. Disabling apps is a way to basically freeze and hide any unused, unwanted, or unruly system apps that came on your phone (ie: ones that you can’t uninstall). This feature might come in handy if your phone came stocked with a bunch of unwanted bloatware that you never use. If you’re sick of looking at those unused icons cluttering up your app drawer, you can simply disable them and
Android 102: Wireless file transfer
I use Linux for my PC operating system. That means I don't get any fancy Android File Transfer programs to use to copy files on and off of my devices, and setting up MTP support is a hassle -- not to mention the closed nature of the whole mess. I can use the command line and adb to copy files back and forth, and sometimes I do, but the easy way is to use an app that acts as a remote server and "browse" my files with Chromium or Firefox. They also work with Windows or Mac OS for those times
[New Game] Once More, With Feeling: Gamevil's Zenonia 5 Available Now With Global Multiplayer
Gamevil's Zenonia franchise has been impossible to ignore on Android, if only because there have been four relatively high-budget releases in as many years. The fifth installment of the action RPG series, subtitled "Wheel Of Destiny" in the continuing tradition of semi-meaningless JRPG convention, is available now. It's a free download for anyone running Android 2.2 or later.Gamevil's claim that Zenonia is the "definitive action RPG" might be a little dubious, but it's certainly got its share

Original Galaxy Note gets Jelly Bean test leak
After Samsung debuted some awesome new features on the Galaxy Note II, many original Note owners were left wondering if their devices would get a taste of those features. After already updating the Note once this year, it looks like they’re prepping another jelly bean flavored update pretty soon. That tasty update has been leaked by SamMobile and includes plenty of new features.Unfortunately, Samsung hasn’t added support for the S-Pen in their Jelly Bean source code, so some of those

Apple reportedly going to replace Samsung chips with TSMC CPUs next year
There’s probably no greater rivalry in the mobile space right now than the one between Apple and Samsung, although one could argue that the Apple vs Google battle is also quite important for the mobile market. In addition to competing for market share and profits in probably every smartphone and tablet market out there, the two companies are also fighting it out in a plethora of patent-based lawsuits around the globe. But at the end of the day they’re also business partners, with Samsung

If you’re rocking one of Pioneer’s recent audio video receivers, you’ll be excited to know that the company has just released a firmware update that allows owners to take advantage of HTC’s Connect technology. This means users can now use their HTC One X, One X+, One VX or Droid DNA smartphones to wireless stream music directly to their receivers via DLNA. The news comes just a few months following the initial introduction of Pioneer’s HTC Connect-compatible SMA wireless
Microsoft attacks Google with “Scroogled” campaign
While anti-Google ads from Microsoft are nothing new, their latest salvo fired against the company seems less like an advertisement for a search engine, and more like a political attack ad.“Scroogled,” a portmanteau of “Google” and “screwed,” seems to be a major focus of Bing’s holiday advertising, and to be fair, it isn’t completely baseless. In May of this year, Google Shopping made a transition from using a search algorithm similar to how other Google searches work to a
Sailboat Championship all but gets wind in your hair and saltwater in your veins
Sailing is one of those things that can be explained in a couple of minutes, but it really takes a lifetime to master. Sailboat Championship (from Infinite Dreams) marries the fundamentals of being on the water with excellent Android gameplay. You've got to pay attention to where the wind is coming from, first and foremost. That affects your course, of course. Depending on the difficulty level, you might only have to worry about steering -- and the wheel has a good bit of travel to it, adding

Gmail now allows you to send larger files, thanks to Google Drive integration
Ever had a situation where you needed to send a few larger files over email, only to find that what you were sending out would have went over the file limit size? The good news is the days of 25MB file limits are over for Google users, thanks to the integration of Google Drive into Gmail.Instead of a measly 25MB, you can now upload up to 10GB through Gmail. We doubt that many of you are planning on sending 10GB attachments with your email messages anytime soon. Still, this is really useful for

Official AdBlock Plus app now available in the Play Store
Blocking ads on your device is moral grey area, but it’s hard to argue that it has benefits. AdBlock Plus is one of the most popular ad blocking plugins for browsers available, and it works extremely well. And luckily for Android users, an official app has made its way onto Google’s Play Store. Most ad blocking apps right now require root, but AdBlock Plus is a little different. It’s compatible with almost all browsers in the Play Store without root, but only over WiFi. If you want
The Samsung Galaxy Note II can create cool, trippy water art
The Phablet push is not over yet, and Samasung is leading the pack with it’s latest 5.5-inch monster, the Galaxy Note II. Samsung’s latest ad for the device shows Steak Studio, a London based design consulting firm, creating a work of interactive water art that is controlled by Samsung’s latest and greatest phablet. The art display features 408 small fish tank pumps, that replicate whatever the user draws on the screen of the Galaxy Note II into ripples on a pool of water. This extremely
F-Droid is the FOSS application store for your Android phone
One of the cool things about Android is the open market model. The folks at Google don't mind at all if you sideload apps, or use your phone to build apps of your own, or even if you install a whole separate application market. That's the real meaning of open when you hear the word being tossed around so freely. Because the platform is open, we get to see things like F-Droid.F-Droid is a third party application "store" that hosts FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) in a repository for easy
Blue Skies Live Wallpaper updated for Android 4.2 Daydreams
There's not a lot to see here -- that's the Blue Skies live wallpaper I've been using for some time now. What's new is that it's been updated to serve as a sort of screen save as part of the Android 4.2 full-screen "Daydreams" feature. So when you plug in your phone, you can enjoy the same beautiful sky as when it's sitting in your hand.Expect to see more live wallpapers do this, we reckon, and don't forget to check to see if your favorite widgets have been updated to work on the Android 4.2
DocScanner S now available on Android
DocScanner, an app that has over 1.5 million downloads on the iOS platform, has just launched onto Android. The basic idea behind these types of apps is simple -- scan pretty much any type of document, business card or receipt and you now have a digital copy of it. Nowadays we don't want to deal with paper more than we have to, and if there's a simple way to manage it electronically we'll take it.DocScanner S is now available for free in the Google Play Store at the link above. Compromises in ongoing Apple and Samsung saga ‘not likely’
Sources close to Samsung posit that the Korean electronics giant has no plans to meet Apple halfway in its ongoing disputes and is further bolstering its legal resources to bring the fight to the next level. According to the Korea Times, the two smartphone giants will continue their battles over patent lawsuits for the foreseeable future, despite an example of compromise arising in recent days.A Seoul-based market analyst told the publication that Samsung will not settle the way that HTC did

Hyperwave Review: There's A Lot To Like About Lasers
There are only so many permutations of the scrolling arcade shooter, but that didn't stop developer CatfishBlues from taking a swing at it with Hyperwave. This is a top-down game that could pass for the spiritual successor to Space Invaders. You have to pilot your lone craft against all the glowing horrors of space to defend humanity. At least that's what the backstory is supposed to be. It's really just an excuse to shoot stuff, but that's okay.Your ship in Hyperwave is restricted to moving
Samsung: no child labor in China, but will address labor issues in manufacturing facilities
CLW Investigation In response to allegations of abusive labor practices in its manufacturing facilities in China, Samsung initiated an audit of its suppliers in the country. While no cases of child labor have been found, Samsung nonetheless says it is addressing other “inadequate practices,” including illegal overtime, sexual harassment and physical and verbal abuse.Labor concerns in China are not solely the problem of Apple and Samsung. But given that the two companies are currently at
Motorola to close dedicated websites for some markets
Not too long ago Motorola reported they were going to be downsizing a bit after Google bought them. Looks like some of that downsizing is going to come in the form of website consolidation in other countries. This basically means that you’ll be redirected to a server in another country when you try to visit a Motorola site if you’re on the list to lose the dedicated website.Motorola sent an email stating that “India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Israel, the rest of Asia, the rest of Europe, Middle

More 'HTC Deluxe' promo shots leak
Verizon's HTC Droid DNA may have already been released (and reviewed), but mystery still surrounds the possibility of an international version of the phone. Earlier leaks have referred to it as the "DLX" or "Deluxe," though it's not clear whether this is the marketing name for the device or merely a codename. In any case, the latest round of leaked shots, obtained by GSMArena, shows the brown, black and white versions of the "Deluxe" in suitably luxurious settings. As for the device itself, it's

Samsung execs state that Apple iPhones can’t exist without Samsung patents
By now, even the most loyal Android, Windows, and iOS fans are tired of these patent disputes. They’ve been raging worldwide for well over a year and have cost pretty much everyone a lot of money. Even though each company is confident they’re going to come out on top, perhaps no one is more confident than Samsung. They’ve recently stated that Apple’s iPhone can’t exist without them. That is a pretty bold statement from Samsung. The Korean based company is confident that their wireless

While Toy Defense doesn't invent a genre, it's a
Asus Padfone 2 spotted in white in a series of press shots
It's an Asus Padfone 2. But, it's an Asus Padfone 2 in white. That's really all there is different here, but as a series of press shots obtained by VR-Zone show, there's a white version of Asus' phone/tablet combination on the way. The phone is all white, and the tablet dock shares the coloring too. Reportedly though the front face of the tablet -- not shown in any of the images -- retains the original black bezels. Considering the official looking nature of these shots, it's likely we'll be

Nexus 4 stock alert app now available on the Play Store
Still fuming over that Nexus 4 launch debacle? Well, what’s done is done, however this little gem may be of some assistance. The app claims to regularly check the Google Play Store link for any changes and alert you if it becomes available, much like a Chrome extension only in app form.I’ve been running the app for

Creatorverse Takes The Rube Goldberg Machine To The Next Level, Lets You Create Basically Anything You Want And Share It With The World
If you had an open canvas to create basically anything and bring it to life, what would you do with it? That's essentially the question asked by Creatorverse, a new app that lets you do just that. It's actually a little difficult to explain; thankfully Linden Research - yes, the same Linden Research behind Second Life - made a video that explains it pretty clearly. So, with Creatorverse, you make things that do things. Then you share those things with everyone else, who can, in turn, make your
LG Kids Pad launches in Korea tomorrow
With the market for kid-friendly tablets continuing to grow, it makes sense that more companies are trying to get in on the action. LG is the latest company to enter the market with the LG Kids Pad, which launches in Korea tomorrow. It isn’t likely that this is an Android tablet, but we can’t rule that out since LG hasn’t said anything about the specs of the device yet. We do know that the LG Kids Pad is aimed at a lower age group than other kid-friendly tablets, and will use a system of

Samsung To Present On big.LITTLE Architecture For Mobile In February
According to EE Times, Samsung is preparing to describe a mobile processor using ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture at ISSCC (International Solid State Circuits Conference) in February 2013. This big.LITTLE concept is kind of genius. You take a couple quad-core clusters and assign one to run the OS and other less resource-intensive tasks and have the other cluster focus on the heavy lifting. The “little” cluster can be light and efficient while the “big” cluster can house the
Todoist for Android aims to be the last “todo” app you’ll ever need
Perfecting the arsenal for your todo list needs has been the goal of many-a developer over the years. Remember the Milk is one of the finer options and suffices for most people. Any.DO came in and stole the thunder from them, and did so with ferocity and tenacity. Now, a new challenger steps into the ring.At its core, Todoist isn’t a killer app that everyone should stop the presses for — there’s only so much you can do with a todo list experience, after all. But it’s how it does it

Samsung continues to push ahead with Android OS upgrades for its leading smartphones, and the latest leaked build to emerge demonstrates Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean on the international Galaxy Note 2 (GT-N7100). The leaked firmware comes via Vietnamese site Tinhte.vn, and as you might expect, it looks a whole lot like Android 4.1.1 running on the Galaxy Note 2. Amazon Appstore update pushing out, fixes Android 4.2 login issue
Since Android 4.2 started getting into peoples hands, whichever device it may be on, the Amazon Appstore has been experiencing an extremely irritating bug. Whatever happens, the Appstore application would log you out of its own accord forcing a re-login to use. Worse still, according to several Android Central Forums users, each login would add another authorized device to your overall list. Doxie Go review
Doxie Go is a unique type of scanner in that it lets you scan and save your documents while on the go, making them immediately available in multiple capacities. Moreover, it’s a sheet-fed scanner that allows users to scan photos, receipts, documents, and other items and store them in a variety of manners. Prefer to keep your files stored on a SD card? No problem. Want to put them in the cloud (Evernote, Dropbox, etc) and share with others? Done. Want to wait until you sync up with the PC?
HTC's Peter Chou dismisses talk of $6-8 per-phone payment to Apple
Since HTC and Apple settled their patent disputes and agreed to a cross-licensing agreement, there's been plenty of speculation as to exactly what this deal entails. One figure floating around the blogosphere last week was $6-8 per phone -- an estimated amount that at least one analyst thinks HTC might be paying Apple. However HTC CEO Peter Chou was quick to rubbish this particular number at a recent public appearance in Tokyo. According to reports from Reuters, when asked directly,

Nexus 4 Dot Live Wallpaper brings the back of the Nexus 4 to your wallpaper
The simplest things in life often bring us the most pleasure, and this one sits somewhere in that category. One of the defining features of the new LG Nexus 4, is of course the pattern on the rear. Paying homage to the original Nexus One live wallpaper pattern, caught in the right light it's a pleasure to look at. Not content with limiting to the rear of Google's latest baby, there's now a live wallpaper that attempts to bring the effect to the front. Simply known as Nexus 4 Dot Live
Sony Mobile sales chief promises a more competitive flagship smartphone
Sony has been a part of the Android scene about as long as any manufacturer, but despite a handful of aesthetically pleasing phones, they haven’t done much to establish themselves as a top smartphone option. That honor has gone to the likes of Samsung and HTC (as well as the iPhone), something that sales chief Dennis van Schie admits the company needs to address.“We will create in the near future a flagship model that can compete with Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S III,” Schie

Galaxy S2 4G coming to Boost Mobile in Titanium for $369.99
We saw a leaked press render of a Galaxy S2 "Titanium" coming to Sprint just a couple weeks ago, which was reaffirmed by a device roadmap leak as well. O2 UK's Nexus 4 reportedly SIM-unlocked
If you live in the UK and weren't lucky enough to bag yourself a Nexus 4 from the Google Play Store, there might be a way -- albeit an expensive way -- to get your hands on an unlocked 16GB model. As we reported a few weeks back, O2 scored a month-long exclusivity period, meaning it's the only carrier able to directly sell the Nexus 4 in the UK until mid-December. (Carphone Warehouse has the new Nexus too, though officially they're not offering it SIM-free.)Today we're seeing reports from
Popular Science picks Google Now as the Innovation of the Year
Since its launch alongside Android 4.1 Jelly Bean back at Google IO in the summer, Google Now has become an intriguing, and in some cases integral part of every day life. Android nerds aren't the only ones to take a shine to the service either it seems, with Popular Science naming it as the Innovation of the Year. Make no mistake, this is an impressive accolade to receive. Google Now finds itself among such distinguished company as the digital camera, the Large Hadron Collider and follows on
Sharp to capitalize on own large screen with Sharp Aquos SH930W, but early review not so great
This week’s official announcement regarding the release of the DROID DNA from HTC continued a trend we have seen of manufacturers pushing the limits of screen size and resolution. The DROID DNA’s 5-inch 1080p display produced by Sharp is certainly an eye-catching feature of the new handset. Sharp appears to want to be able to get in the market with its own device sporting the top of the line LCD they produce, which is why they are working on a Sharp Aquos SH930W smartphone.Rather than
Chrome OS and Google Now themes give Android a fresh new look
It was a few months back Google began rolling out their all new redesigned Chrome user interface for Chromebooks. While the functionality or convenience of a Chrome-only laptop was still up for debate, everybody was pretty much in agreement that the new design of the OS was beautiful. Clean, minimal — all the great things we loved about Android, but with a flavor all of its own.It was this design that sparked the imagination of Android themers, and we even showed you one such design titled
Google reportedly in talks with Dish Network on launching new wireless service
Google has recently been in talks with satellite-TV provider Dish Network about partnering to create a new wireless service, according to people close to the situation. It’s worth noting that they also said the talks weren’t advanced and could ultimately not amount to anything, and Google isn’t the only company that Dish has been talking with, but the possibility of Google entering direct competition with the likes of Verizon and AT&T is pretty exciting. In 2008, Dish Network acquired

Banjo 3.0 brings location-based social media and networking to a new level
If you followed the election coverage this past month, you may know that the media was using a new means of gathering polling data: Banjo. Banjo is an app for both Android and iPhone that combines feeds of your friends’ check-ins from literally anywhere in the world, and shows you real-time trends going on in that region. The company is now launching the 3.0 version of their app, which comes with a completely new user interface. Facebook updated with improved sharing, photo albums
Most people who use the Facebook app on a regular basis have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with it. While we continue to wait for a native app experience that would greatly improve performance, Facebook continues to roll out updates with basic feature enhancements. This latest one improves sharing and management of photos. Posts in the timeline now have big simple buttons across the bottom of them to "like", "comment" and "share" (where applicable) the post. Tapping the "share" button

White 64GB HTC One S goes on sale in Taiwan, runs Jelly Bean out of the box
We're not going to lie, we're pretty envious of this one. According to ePrice, what we have here is the latest HTC One device to go on sale in Asia, specifically at this time in Taiwan. On the face of it, it's a regular old HTC One S, except that it's got a stunning new white paint job. Except, that's not the whole tale. Inside, this HTC One S is packing some pretty impressive specs right out of the box. The latest version of HTC Sense, Sense 4+, running over Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Oh, and
Pantech Magnus for AT&T press shot leaks out
Frequent leak source for reliable press shots evleaks is showing off an upcoming AT&T device from Pantech, the "Magnus" (which we presume is a codename). The device, going by the model P9090, bares an uncanny resemblance to the previously announced Pantech Flex, which recently hit AT&T in September. The device looks to be running at least Android 4.0, considering the launcher style and signature on-screen navigation keys, but we'd sure like if that was actually 4.1 Jelly Bean under the

HTC ThunderBolt vs. the Droid DNA
What a difference a year and a half makes, eh? OK, call it 20 months, maybe. Regardless, here's the brand-new Verizon Droid DNA, and the aging ThunderBolt. HTC phones, both. One represents the manufacturer's first go at an LTE device, back when the technology was new, and design (and battery life) suffered for it. A 4.3-inch display. Mere 1400 mAh battery. And, damn, was that thing ever thick. Now we have the Droid DNA. A 5-inch Super LCD3 display that's got 1,080 freakin' pixels on the short
Call of Duty Elite for Android updated with Black Ops 2 support
In case you haven’t heard (or have been in a bomb shelter for the past year or so) Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was released worldwide yesterday, and if you forgot that there is an official Call of Duty Elite app for Android then you might want to go redownload it. The app has been updated to include support for Black Ops 2, and a whole new slew of features are awaiting you.For starters, you’ll get a full stat tracker like you did with Modern Warfare 3. You’ll be able to view your career
Sega’s Jet Set Radio finally gets an official release date for Android
Released back in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast, Jet Set Radio has long held the top spot as one of my top 10 favorite video games of all time. Yes, it’s that good. To say I was ecstatic when the HD remake was finally released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles a few weeks ago is an understatement. But, as so often is the case with console titles, my busy “on-the-go” lifestyle doesn’t afford me the luxury of sitting on my couch for more than 10 minutes at a time. You can imagine my
Predators for Android review
The Predators game launched on Google Play last week, offering fast-paced stealth action with a healthy dose of gore. Many familiar names from the 2010 movie show up, though you spend most of your time hunting humans rather than playing as them - after all, folks only really watch those flicks for glimpses of the hulking monsters, right?Players take control of a predator alien through 31 stages and an unlockable challenge mode, using a variety of classic weaponry and technology to complete a
Level Up Studio teases new Beautiful Widgets 5.0
A couple of the benefits Android users enjoy compared to other mobile platforms include the ability to put widgets on their screens and the ability to customize the interface. Level Up Studio helps merge those two functions with their Beautiful Widgets app that gives users the ability to implement some stunning widgets on their devices. Being one of the first in the market does have a downside though as an app can become out of date, especially with changes to the Android ecosystem. To combat

Get this look for your Android smartphone: GoogleNowXE
One of our absolute favorite things about Android is the fact that you can bend and tweak the platform to your needs. Sure, there’s rooting and modding for deep level personalization, but that stuff does not always concern the everyman user. Some of just like to change the home screen around a bit and create a new user experience. To that end, we’ve created a series of posts on AndroidGuys where we will highlight an occasional design and its accompanying apps. In a nutshell we will show

First look at the lockscreen widgets in Android 4.2
Finally, we get our first real look at the new lockscreen widgets in Android 4.2. This is a feature that was teased at the outset, but our prerelease units have now been updated with them, and it's time to put them through their paces.Actually, this update does more than just add the ability to add lock screen widgets. It changes the way you use the lock screen itself. Previously, you'd slide the unlock button to the left to quickly access the camera from the lock screen. That's gone. The
GoPro app for Android now available
GoPro has launched a free companion app for their rugged mountable HD cameras. The Android app provides access to the whole suite of settings, and offers a live preview of what the camera sees, which should help with framing when you're about to leap out of an airplane, wingsuit to the slopes, land on a snowboard, pop a backflip off the first jump, and chug a Mountain Dew mid-air.Before getting all extreme, be sure your phone is running Android 4.0 and up and that your GoPro camera is loaded
Multi-user accounts on the Nexus 10
The consumer release version of Android 4.2 just hit our review devices, and I had to dive in and check out multiple user accounts on the Nexus 10. It's been in the works since Honeycomb, and quite a few of us are looking forward to being able to share one device with our significant other, or with our kids, or anyone. All without the privacy concern of letting them have access to your Google credentials.I'm not sure just what we were expecting (myself included), but the process was super
Pre-release Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 devices getting an OTA
We received some communication from Google letting us know that the official consumer release was rolling out to Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 review units, and like clockwork it just appeared. This update should bring the lockscreen widgets and multi-user login to the Nexus 10, and put the lockscreen widgets on the Nexus 4. We're installing now, and will pick through it.Stay tuned!Nexus 4 review | Nexus 10 review

HTC might pay Apple $6-8 per device in patent settlement
Though the most HTC would say about their patent settlement with Apple was that they didn't expect the process to "have an adverse material impact on the financials of the company," analyst Shaw Wu says they may be paying upwards of $6 - $8 per device in licensing fees starting in 2013. This would span both Android and Windows Phone devices, and could amount to between $180 and $280 million in fees. That's not an awful lot to Apple, but sure is more substantial than HTC was letting on. Though
Should I upgrade? Samsung Galaxy S3 versus the Nexus 4
It’s time for the third installment of our “should I upgrade series,” and this time we’re pitting the brand new Nexus 4 against Samsung’s 30-million-selling Galaxy S3. Over the past week we’ve already compared the new LG-built Nexus against HTC’s One X and Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus. But this is the big one -- the Galaxy S3 is the year’s best-selling Android smartphone, and many S3 owners will be wondering whether it’s worth swapping out Samsung’s latest for the
Samsung Nexus 10 review
We get giddy around here when new Nexus devices get released. Some of you guys and gals do, too. This go ‘round, we get a twofer with both the LG Nexus 4 (check out Phil's great review), and the Samsung Nexus 10 hitting Google Play at the same time.'Tis a good time to be an Android fan.The screen is beyond beautiful, and the next-generation hardware under the glass should be able to push Android in ways we would have never thought possible a scant 12 months ago -- and maybe it pushes it a
YouTube update allows video pushing from your device to your Google TV
Google brings word today of an imminent update to the YouTube Android application for mobile and Google TV, that brings a much welcomed feature with it. Apparently they've been working on it since 2010, and it's now ready for the prime time. The updated app hasn't been seen in the Play Store yet -- at least, not by any of the AC staff around the globe -- but when it does drop, you'll be able to send videos from YouTube on your mobile device, to your Google TV. Sweet. With your devices on the

Today, leaked information from a Taiwanese forum might indicate a wider Asian launch for the device. The images above have emerged on ePrice, showing the HTC DLX in black, white and brown flavors. According to the source, the brown and black version will be available in China, while HTC's native Taiwan will
How-To unlock the Nexus 10 bootloader
One of the reasons you buy a Nexus device is easy, complete access to the device hardware. The stock software is great, but we all know sometimes its fun to tinker around with your own creations. Nexus devices have locked bootloaders out of the box (and that's a good thing), but unlocking them is trivial. Just like the Nexus phones and tablets before it, the Nexus 10 is no exception.Just because unlocking the bootloader is easy doesn't mean it's for everyone, however. Part of unlocking is
Google services halted in China – Communist Party Congress at fault?
It was all good and usual in China until reports of issues with Google services started flooding in. The reasons are still unknown, but it seems Google services have been halted in the faraway land. This includes Gmail, Google Maps and Google Docs, which are essential to many users. What is even more interesting is that it happened right as the 18th Chinese Communist Party Congress takes place, which is when the country’s new leaders are elected. During this event, the Chinese Government
LG Escape review
While the LG Escape isn’t brand new, nor was its release back in September exactly hotly anticipated, we here at Android Central are nothing if not thorough, and we believe that everyone should have all facts before they throw down some sawbucks on a new phone. Here, we’ll take a brief look at LG’s entry-level device and how the $50 Escape fares against the rest of AT&T’s portfolio, just in time for the holiday season.Physically speaking, the Escape is a $50 version of the Optimus

There were some questions whether there will be pre-orders or if Google will even ship these devices on the 13th when ordered. Thanks to the folks at Android Police, they got an answer straight from Google themselves:AndroidPolice: Is Google going to start

Google Free Zone brings free access to Google products for “the next billion users”
While many of us take having a smartphone with always-connected data for granted, there are plenty that either cannot afford it, or simply don’t have it available. And with that in mind, Google has launched a new service. The service is dubbed the Google Free Zone and it will bring free mobile access to those without a carrier data plan. But before everyone gets excited. The Google Free Zone is currently only available in one country and with one carrier. The country is the Philippines and the

Analyst Firm Estimates Galaxy S III Was The World's Best-Selling Smartphone In Q3
According to Reuters, analyst firm Strategy Analytics has determined that during the third quarter of 2012, the Galaxy S III was the world's best-selling smartphone. Now, there is one small caveat that does put a slight damper on this rather big achievement for Samsung, and that's the fact that the iPhone 5 was slated to launch at the end of Q3, which always slows down current-gen iPhone sales. It's also pretty unlikely Samsung will hold onto this title for Q4. The numbers? An estimate of 18
HTC One X+ review
After a tumultuous year, HTC needs to score some big wins this holiday season. Many critics, including ourselves, have been full of praise for its HTC One series, led by the venerable One X. But every passing quarter seems to bring depressingly familiar news for the Taiwanese manufacturer -- record sales and profits for Android rival Samsung, and tumbling revenues for HTC.On the Windows Phone side, the HTC 8X -- a great handset by any standard -- looks set to make a big impact in the coming

Images leak for the Sony C6603 ‘Yuga’
We reported about a new Sony beast dubbed the “Odin” or C650X (the X gets replaced with a number) from a leaked agent profile and shortly after, an image leaked. Now we have images of a C6603 compliments of German site Android Schweiz, with a codename “Yuga”. I am assuming this is the same phone, but with a new bump in the model number. The specs seem the same as anticipated, 5-inch 1080p display, 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, and running Android 4.1 Jelly
Official eBay for Android app hits version 2.1

As for new features, you can now save multiple draft listings, shipping can now be calculated (in the U.S.) and there are more pre-populated fields to simplify posting. As for fixes, there are improvements to saved searches, improved tracking information handling and better image

Motorola Adds Electrify M To Bootloader Unlock Program - No Developer Edition Required
Following the ATRIX HD, the recently announced Electrify M destined for U.S. Cellular is Motorola's newest member of the bootloader unlock program. The Electrify M is basically the RAZR M with minor visual tweaks but, unlike its Verizon sibling, won't come in a separate, more expensive developer-friendly flavor. Instead, like the Photon Q on Sprint and the RAZR i/HD outside of U.S., it's unlockable out of the box.An unlocked bootloader means Electrify M owners will have full blessing of US
Arcane Legends review
Arcane Legends recently enjoyed a soft launch in Canada and Australia, bringing a fresh, colorful fantasy MMORPG to Android. The developer, Spacetime Studios, has a lot of experience in freemium mobile massively multiplayer online games, having kicked off the trend with Pocket Legends way back when, and since released other themed games such as Star Legends and Dark Legends. I’ve dabbled in those previously, but let me say right off the bat that Arcane Legends blows the others out of the
Android adoption rate six times that of the iPhone
Internet trends guru, Mary Meeker, released her latest reports recently and the news is very favorable on the Android front. At an event in San Francisco she presented minutia of data focusing primarily on mobile growth. It doesn’t seem like enough can be written about the sheer size and scope of mobile growth these days, and Ms. Meeker’s numbers certainly reflect that. The fact that stands out most of them all? Android adoption rate is 6 times that of the iPhone. We knew adoption had to be

Rumored Microsoft Office app for mobile devices screens captured
Last month we reported on an event in the Czech Republic where a representative of Microsoft revealed native versions of Microsoft Office were being prepared for both the Android and iOS platforms. The timeline hinted at mobile versions being ready sometime in the first quarter of 2013.Today, The Verge was able to obtain some screenshots of the app that seem to indicate development is well underway. The screenshots suggest that at least MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Excel files will be
Sprint Galaxy Note 2 OTA bringing Multi Window View
When the Galaxy Note 2 started showing up on carrier store shelves here in the U.S., there was one curious omission to the firmware. The U.S. variants of the device were shipping without Samsung's touted Multi Window View software that lets users move around different apps in small windows while they do other things on the device. Well, fear not if you're on Sprint because the feature is rolling out OTA (Over The Air) starting today. The update to software version L900VPALJC is primarily to

HTC ends October with a 60% fall in revenue
HTC has revealed its revenue numbers for October, and it’s not pretty. The Taiwanese smartphone company posted a 60% drop in revenue from October of last year, coming in around $588 million. That’s down from $1.5 billion last year.HTC has been in steady decline for the past year, and that doesn’t look to be changing anytime soon. Personally, I think part of this is because of HTC’s more closed approach to their phones recently. A non-removable battery and lack of SD card slot tends to
Kmart Black Friday ad a smattering of dirt-cheap, no-name Androids
Posted Nov 6 2012 by Scott Webster in General News, Handset News, Hardware News, News, Tablet News The Kmart Black Friday ad is online today and it certainly has its fair share of Android products. Well, fair share of stuff you’ve never heard of. Don’t look for top-shelf stuff from the likes of Samsung or HTC, all there is here is plenty in the way of X-treme and 4Sight. Yeah, that’s what we said, too. Nevertheless, you can bet your leftover Halloween candy that people will still

Samsung and Amazon snatch tablet market share from Apple
IDC's quarterly research of the tablet market revealed that Samsung and Amazon have done really well lately at the expense of the iPad. By comparison, the iPad claimed 65.5% in Q2 2012, and 59.7% tablet market share in Q3 2011. IDC figures that the tablet market has grown nearly 50%

And you'd reply, "I'm sorry that Johnny has a big stupid face and he made me want to punch it"? Apple's been doing the same thing, except in this case the kids are billion-dollar international companies. With big stupid faces.By now you've probably seen Apple's original apology to Samsung, ordered by the UK court to punish the company's assertion that Samsung wholly copied the iPad design.
Impressive growth for Android tablet sales as Apple falters according to latest IDC report
Do you remember back in September when IDC predicted Android tablets would not see any significant growth in the share of the market that they command? IDC probably hopes you have forgotten that in light of their report today showing some significant changes in the tablet market during the third quarter of 2012. Perhaps the most stunning change was the worldwide market share for Apple devices, which slipped from a commanding 65.5% of the market in the second quarter to 50.4% in the third
Instagram profiles coming to the web
After holing up on mobile since its inception, Instagram has announced that their iconic photo sharing app will be hitting the web with full profiles over the next couple of days. Previously, you could only really view individual pictures on the web, but these new profile pages allow users to follow fellow Instagrammers, leave comments and likes on pictures, or edit their profiles. Instagram was recently snatched up by Facebook, so it's not surprising to see them opening up a little bit.

Nexus 10 falls just short of iPad 4 in benchmark comparisons
Posted Nov 5 2012 by Justin Marden in General News, Hardware News, News, Tablet News The Nexus 10 has already been dubbed an “iPad killer” (how many times have we heard that before?), but according to a recent benchmark comparison, it falls below the iPad 4 in nearly every performance category. It’s interesting to see that the Nexus 10 fares very well in comparison to some of the top smartphones of the day, but it can’t take the crown for the tablet world just yet. You can check out
Hands on with Echofon beta for Android
Anyone who has ever used an iOS device or an Apple computer, will likely have come across Echofon at some point along the way. While it may have been caught up, and even passed, in popularity since, it has been around for some time. Funnily enough, around the same sort of time the Echofon team announced that they would be withdrawing any future support for their Mac client, the alpha build of their Android application started doing the rounds. The desktop app is now no longer, with the Mac

Outside of Google Play's reach, Nexus 4 pricing may not be so sweet
Most people were pretty caught off guard when Google announced some ridiculously low pricing for the Nexus 4. At $299/$349 in the U.S. and Canada, €299/€349 in Europe and £239/£279 in the U.K. with international availability at launch, it seemed like Google had done everything right this time around. On November 13, the Google Play store page for the Nexus 4 will go live with shipping availability to the U.S., U.K., Canada, Germany, France, Spain and Australia. For the countries not
Android 4.1.2 update for Galaxy Note could add Nature UX, multi-window feature
Samsung has already provided a wealth of software upgrades for the original Galaxy Note, which first shipped just over a year ago on Android 2.3-based firmware. Now signs seem to point towards the OG Note being updated directly to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, as part of an upgrade that'll include two major new features -- the TouchWiz Nature UX, and the multi-window feature from the Galaxy Note 2. Multi-window was a showcase feature for the Note 2, allowing multiple apps to be used on a split

DIY: Custom comic book case for Samsung Galaxy S III
Is that boring solid-color or ubiquitously-designed plastic case just not cutting it anymore? Well, perhaps it’s time to recycle and outfit it with a custom comic book theme. This do it yourself project stems from the same style of paper mache-like tactics you used in elementary art class. The process is fairly straightforward. Simply cut out your desired pieces of reading material and attach them to your case via Mod Podge application finish. After it sets, just apply some matte or glossy
Android 4.2 clock and keyboard apps available for flashing
Earlier this week, after Google announced Android 4.2, an update to Jelly Bean, some sources managed to obtain standalone apk files for the 4.2 keyboard. The keyboard from 4.2 is sought after due to the inclusion of “Gesture Typing,” which allows users to glide their finger over the keyboard in a Swype-like fashion. Google asked sources to take down links to the apk files as the software was not yet ready for versions other than 4.2.That has not stopped work by others to extract the code
LG Rumored To Sell Nexus 4 At A Significantly Higher Cost Than What Is Found In The Play Store
While it’s exciting that Google is selling the Nexus 4 through its Play Store for as little as $299 here in the US and parts of Europe, it looks like those in other parts of the world may not be so lucky to grab the device for such a low price. According to Androidos, there are reports coming in from Europe indicating that LG will be selling the Nexus 4 directly for as much as €599 or $768 USD in countries like Italy. Additional reports indicate similar pricing for other markets including
Nexus 4 battery confirmed to be easily replaceable
When Google unveiled the LG-produced Nexus 4, some potential customers were frustrated by the lack of a removable battery. This may be bothersome for those who rely on extra batteries to get through the day, but those worried about replacing broken, defective or burnt-out batteries should no longer do so.As it turns out, this may not be as big of an issue as some have anticipated. While we previously got a good look at the underlying internals of the device, new information suggests the

Zombie Driver THD Review: You Got Your Shooter In My Racing Game
A review of Exor Studio's Zombie Driver is somewhat redundant, since it's been available on PCs via Steam for almost three years. But as any dedicated mobile gamer knows, translating a console or PC gaming experience to a handheld is rarely as straightforward as developers or publishers think, and the $7 asking price is a respectable chunk of change, even for a proven game. So, does the NVIDIA-published THD version of Zombie Driver live up to its undead-slaying progenitor? For the most part,

[Download] Official Android 4.2 Clock App And Keyboard With Gesture Typing
Earlier this week, we posted the slightly unfinished Android 4.2 keyboard with Swype-like gesture typing and pretty blue glow (which we since took down at Google's request). Thanks to the recent Android 4.2 system dump from the Nexus 4, some new goodies are now available for pre-4.2 versions of Android. Namely the release version of the keyboard and the new Clock app that Ron is already in love with. Recognized XDA developer Gnufabio snagged each of the aforementioned apps, porting the

How-To unlock the Nexus 4 bootloader
A lot of us who are planning to buy the LG Nexus 4 will be doing so because of the developer options, including the easily unlockable bootloader. Unlocking your bootloader is something to think about before you jump in and do it, because a locked bootloader is essential to keeping your device secure. Once you unlock it, a knowledgeable person can take every bit of data off your phone, even if you're unrooted and have adb debugging turned off, and even with a secure lock screen. Now that's out

Initial Impressions Of The Nexus 10: Say Hello To The New Benchmark For 10" Android Tablets
At the end of June, Google unveiled its first Nexus-branded tablet to the world: the Nexus 7. Since then, it has become the premier Android tablet, which is now selling at nearly a million units each month. For good reason - it's a fantastic tablet.Despite the storm that rocked NYC, three days ago Google took the wraps off the latest addition to the Nexus tablet family: the Nexus 10. I've been playing with the N10 for the past 24 hours (give or take) and instead of waiting several days to post
New malware could allow SMS phishing, sideloaders beware
Researchers at NC State University have discovered a new bug in current versions of Android that would allow malware to spoof the sender of an SMS message. The exploit works on Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean, Google has been made aware of the issue and will be releasing a security patch. In the meantime, the team at NC State says they won't be releasing all the specifics of how it's done, but chances are someone will find it now that they know what to look for and what

Security Features a big part of Android 4.2
Amongst the many other additions that will be part of Android 4.2, it looks like keeping your device secure will be a priority as well. I know we don’t like the idea of malware on our Android devices, but the fact is, it’s out there. Google is looking to combat that in 4.2 by offering the option of scanning an application before it’s fully installed. Once the app is scanned, if it finds something suspicious within the app, it’ll then prompt you and inform you as such and give you the
Panasonic Eluga getting Ice Cream Sandwich update
Panasonic may have all but pulled out of the European smartphone market, but that hasn't stopped it pushing out Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for its ill-fated Eluga. The Eluga, saw a limited launch in June with Gingerbread, can now benefit from standard ICS features like improved multitasking, a redesigned lock screen and various UI enhancements.Panasonic has chosen a somewhat odd upgrade path for the Eluga, however. The upgrade package must be downloaded from the Google Play Store (check

Amazon releases Cloud Drive Photos app for Android
Amazon has released a new app into the Google Play Store called Amazon Cloud Drive Photos. It allows you to view and download to your device photos that you have stored on your Amazon Cloud Drive. Amazon has steadily been adding more photo features to the service; last month we saw picture sharing and iPhoto export functionality added. It is an interesting decision by Amazon to release a standalone app for photos rather than an all inclusive Cloud Drive app. But then again, many consumers want
Android celebrates its fourth birthday with 75% of the world’s smartphone market
Android celebrated its fourth birthday since the launch of the T-Mobile G1 last month, but it seems as though the company may be receiving a belated gift in commemoration. A new market research report suggests that Google’s Android OS currently holds 75 percent of the entire world’s smartphone market, up from 57.5 percent the previous year. This number is astronomical in relation to the relatively short period of time the OS has been around. Of course a large percentage of this figure can

There are only seven levels, but each has three difficulty levels and an endless survival

Get this look for your Android smartphone: Colors (by keeent)
Posted Oct 30 2012 by AndroidGuys in Featured, Handset News, News, ROMs & Modding News, Software News One of our absolute favorite things about Android is the fact that you can bend and tweak the platform to your needs. Sure, there’s rooting and modding for deep level personalization, but that stuff does not always concern the everyman user. Some of just like to change the home screen around a bit and create a new user experience. There’s a wonderful website that we’ve long
Samsung Galaxy Nexus Gets Inductive Charging Mod, Brings Us One Step Closer To Eliminating Wired Futility
One of the great things about Android phones is the ability to well… tinker with them. While most of the mod attention goes to the software side of things (i.e. rooting, ROMs, etc.), Android owners forget there is also the ability to tinker with a device’s hardware as well. With that in mind, a crafty Galaxy Nexus owner named Fenris_Ulf took some time to tinker with his device’s battery charging ability. Like most other devices, the Galaxy Nexus features a micro-USB output— which is
New Google Search app for iOS takes humble approach to best phone question
Apple fans were treated to a new Google Search experience yesterday, one that not only brings an Android 4.1-like card system to results but also features voice input, much to the chagrin of the digital personal assistant Siri. Unlike Siri, however, Google Search takes a humble approach to answering one of the biggest debates between Android and iPhone users.Depending on how the question was posited, when asked, “What’s the best smartphone?” Siri would either respond with a list of
