Eric Schmidt, Google chief executive, presented last Monday (15) a new cell phone equipped with Android Gingerbread featuring the Near-Field Communication technology, a system that allows users to make payments in shops and other establishments only approaching the cell from a terminal, instead of a credit card.
The system uses a special chip that, when approached in the establishment of a terminal, make payments as a credit card. For Schmidt, the idea is that, in future, such cards may be replaced by a mobile phone.
NFC technology is not new, but this integration with a mobile operating system, used worldwide by thousands of people tends to popularize it further, making it increasingly feasible to use the phone as a digital wallet.
Google announced that, at least initially, will not develop applications that can operate in conjunction with the new form of payment, but did not rule out the possibility that other companies do so, thus increasing the possible ways of harnessing new technology to its integrated devices.
