Measuring The Blackberry Z10 Up To The Top Android Devices

It could be a close family member, an important work contact, or a friend. With our busy schedules, sometimes we just forget. If there was an app that allowed us to organize our important contacts so that we’re reminded when necessary, maybe we would be better connected.

What we needed to see was something so sublime, so intrinsically powerful and gorgeous, it amazed us. What we got was well something that could have been released 18 months ago when RIM stopped

'HTC Sense 5' spotted on Droid DNA in China

Captain Clumsy is a fun and free time-waster game
Anyone with time to kill or a public transit daily commute can always find use for a quality one-handed casual game, and Captain Clumsy fits the bill. The premise of this game is basic -- and purposefully so -- as a "falling" style game with simple controls. You're a clumsy pirate (you would be too with 2 hook hands) trying to steal his booty back from the angry gulls that are holding it captive. Your character barrels down through pirate-themed levels, collecting coins and avoiding the bad

LG has just announced plans to roll out its latest flagship, the Optimus G, globally to 50 new countries. There Is A Significant Chance This Is Not A Real Render Of The HTC M7
Ah, after CES we were beginning to wonder when we'd get our next flurry of conflicting rumors. Today's comes in the form of what is being called an official render of the HTC M7. Trouble is, it's not. For starters, PocketNow claims that they're not made by anyone within the company, however according to someone who 'has access' to a photo of the handset, the front looks about right. Allow me to reiterate that point: the claim here is someone has allegedly seen an alleged photo that allegedly

Montaj looking to be the Instagram of video, Android version coming Q2

Capture the essence of the Ubuntu lockscreen with Ubuntu Live Wallpaper
I don't use live wallpapers traditionally. I find that too often there's a trade off in device performance and or battery life to make it worthwhile. Ubuntu Live Wallpaper tries to capture some of the feel of that great looking lockscreen on Ubuntu for Phones, in a live wallpaper for your Android device. Facebook borrows from itself, adds voice messages to main app
A couple weeks after adding the feature to the Facebook Messenger app, voice messages are now a part of the main Facebook application. The folks at PIC (The Presidential Inaugural Committee) have clarified their privacy policy a bit with the Washington Post, and want to let everyone know you don't have to share anything with anyone.Contrary to some concerns, the app only collects one sort of

Luckily, the co-founder of Imangi, Keith Shepherd, stated that the Android release would be coming late next week. Giving us much

HTC 'M7' render leaks out
There’s rightfully some excitement online today about a newly leaked render claiming to show what’s next from HTC -- a high-end Android smartphone known by the codename “M7.” The image comes from UnwiredView via @evleaks, which has a good track record of bringing leaked images like this into public view. The shot seems to show the front face of a phone with rounded corners, the standard assortment of ports and sensors, and an unusual front-facing speaker setup -- or an even weirder
Archos GamePad hitting US in February for $170
Posted Jan 16 2013 by Asad Rafi in Announcements, News, Tablet News Archos launched an Android powered gaming gadget back in August known as the GamePad which was initially made available to UK buyers. Some in the United States were a tad jealous as it seemed a decent alternative to PS Vita and GameBoy. It didn’t hurt that it was also cheaper. Archos looks to be bringing this tablet to the United States as Archos rep recently confirmed it that it will arrive in February. With a price tag
The best calendar apps for Android
For a lot of us, Android’s native calendar does the job - we can plonk in appointments, invite attendees, build different calendars, and have instant access to our schedule with home screen widgets. There are some mighty ambitious third-party apps that try to improve upon the built-in experience, though. In no particular order, here are a few that are worth taking a look at. Pocket Informant is among the more fully-matured and premium calendar apps available for Android. Transitions are
AirDroid 2 Beta APK Is Now Available To All, Remote Camera Access And 'Find Phone' In Tow
Do you use AirDroid? You should. It's a fantastic piece of software. While Google tends to prefer using cloud services to manage your data, there is no central app that can access and change anything on your device. This app fills that need and does so amazingly. It's so great that we gave away 20 invites to the v2 beta recently. Now, the invite-only requirement is gone and it's available to anyone who can download it. Plus, it has some sweet new features you'll want to see.One of the new
Inaugural 2013 has some curious app permissions
The Presidential Inauguration is next Monday, and I was all geared up to tell everyone about the Inaugural 2013 app from AT&T and PIC. It's a beautifully done application, has received rave reviews from the folks who have installed it and looks like it would be really helpful for anyone going to the festivities over the weekend as well as the Inauguration itself. But as Politico notes, there's a bit of a thing here -- according to the application's privacy policy it appears that the app is
New image of HTC M7 surfaces
As we start looking ahead to Mobile World Congress next month in Barcelona, one phone that may generate some interest and speculation is the HTC M7. In light of the slumping fortunes of HTC, the company is hoping to bring out a new flagship device to stem the downward spiral. The M7 may be that device. Loosely based off the DROID DNA, HTC is resisting the push toward bigger phones with a 4.7-inch screen. In most other ways though, the M7 should keep pace with the market offering a 1920 x 1080

Nexus 7 3G now shipping with choice of AT&T or T-Mobile SIM card
Up until now, Google Play was bundling their unlocked Nexus 7 HSPA+ model with an AT&T SIM card, requiring T-Mobile users to buy their SIM card separately. Starting today, Google Play will now offer a T-Mobile SIM card bundle as well.Other than including the T-Mobile SIM card instead, this is the same 32GB HSPA+ tablet and it still costs the same $299. While this really isn’t much of a change, it still means that users can jump right in when their tablet arrives without having to pick up a

UK retailer taking Sony Xperia Z pre-orders [update: price changed]
Update: It seems Expansys' original price of £399.99 for the Xperia Z was an error, as the retailer has just changed its pre-order price to £529.99, in line with other European stores. Bad news for anyone in the UK hoping to bag an Xperia Z on the cheap.Original story: With any new phone announcement comes the inevitable discussion of pricing and availability, which are almost never revealed at the initial press conference. So it is with the Sony Xperia Z, which we first saw us at last
Super Battleships app review
The classic strategy board game of Battleships is available in numerous Android iterations, one of which we recently took for a spin. Called Super Battleships, it’s a free download from a developer known as Easy-Lab.Upon opening the app you’re greeted with a big red button with an arrow directing you to unlock to the right. With no written description or indicator advising what lies ahead we were somewhat curious as to whether this was the right game; there was no splash welcome screen with
How to transfer files to your Android device via WiFi or mobile networks
Connecting your Android device to your computer with a USB cable can be annoying and almost prehistoric. Most people have WiFi networks set up in their home and anyone using a smartphone is going to have a data connection, so why not use those to transfer files to and from your computer with your device? It’s easier and you’re not chained to a USB cable when you want to move some music around. There’s several different ways to get the job down, and this guide is going to go through some
TCL MoVo Google TV first look and preview [video]
CES 2013 might have officially ended about four days ago, but we’re not quite ready to wrap up our coverage from the Las Vegas ground. Naturally, there isn’t anything still going on there, but you probably missed a couple of videos we shot last week due to all the Android-related fuss lately. One of these clips is a preview of yet another Google TV device, called the TCL MoVo. The name probably doesn’t sound very familiar, but don’t think for a moment that TCL is a small company looking
Lomography Kickstarter Moves Film Scanning To Smartphones
The analog-loving Lomography camera company posted its version of Instagram on Kickstarter today. Thankfully, it’s not another app with a ton of retro filters. It’s a 35mm film scanner designed to be used by your Android (or iOS) handset. The Lomography Film Scanner, set to launch March 2013, has several pledge options available but you’ll have to spend at least $50 (at the time of this posting) to grab a hold of a scanner. It will work with a free scanning app that will allows users to
HTC One SV review
It's tough to review a phone that doesn't stand out from the crowd. On the other hand, when the crowd is made up of great phones from HTC like the Droid DNA, One X+ and One S, it's not really a bad thing. That's what you have here with the HTC One SV -- a great little phone that blends in well with the rest of HTC's current offerings. Here in the states, the One SV is exclusive to Cricket. While that's good news for Cricket customers, it means that this one probably won't get the exposure that
Sony Xperia ZL vs Google Nexus 4
For a tech company of its size, experience and influence, Sony is definitely underperforming in the most lucrative tech markets out there: the Android smartphone market.Sure, the Japanese smartphone manufacturer did make steps in the right direction in the past 18 months, starting with the moment it decided to buy out Ericsson’s share in the company back in late 2011. But despite the fact that Sony did great during 2012 in the mid-range and entry-level sectors, they had less fortune in outing
Samsung Revisits The Pebble Blue Galaxy SIII's 'Shortage', Stresses The Importance Of Keeping Promises
In a lengthy, somewhat intimate retrospective piece posted today to Samsung Tomorrow, the electronics giant revisits the launch of the Galaxy SIII. Readers likely remember a launch that almost came off without a hitch, but which was tarnished by a "shortage" of Pebble Blue colored units. Following the international delay, Samsung said there'd be no delay for the Pebble Blue SIII's in the States, and all seemed to be well. Still, the manufacturer was awfully quiet about the real reason behind

Popup Browser App Brings Multi-Window To Galaxy Tab 2 And Possibly Other Devices
Popup Browser for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 allows users to browse the interwebs via a re-sizable browser that floats over the desktop. The floating app produces a very similar result as the multi-window feature found on the Galaxy Note II. XDA user pidio1 created the app for the Galaxy Tab 2 running stock ROM. Another user tried installing the app on a custom ROM but did not fare so well.
I tried flashing the app on the original Galaxy Note but was unable to get it
How to share Photo Sphere pics on Google Maps
I might have mentioned once or twice how Photo Sphere is one of my favorite features of Android 4.2 on the Nexus 4. And I might have slightly bemoaned how the only real ways to view someone's Photo Sphere pictures are on Google+, either in a desktop browser or Android's Google+ app. (And I might have mentioned all that in a single post, yesterday.)Google Maps also got a nod, and I think it's going to be my go-to method for sharing Photo Sphere pics for a couple reasons. What we're doing here is
Kanex Sydnee review
Posted Jan 14 2013 by Scott Webster in Accessory Reviews, Featured, Handset News, Tablet News Have you ever found yourself in a situation where your devices outnumber your available chargers and/or outlets? I know I sure do. Last week with CES, that problem was magnified as I shared a hotel room with three other bloggers. As we got closer to bedtime on the first evening, you could feel each of us eyeballing the outlets and trying to figure out how we would charge our phones, camera, tablets,
Featured Android Game Review: Mini Golf Space 3D [Sports]
Back in August, I reviewed Mini Golf Stars 3D (Name change from 3D Mini Golf Masters), which is one cool mini golf game. It features courses in the sky that had breathtaking views so why not take it to the next level for a little space play? Well the makers of the game, DMW Media, did just that with a new version of the game that they just released called Mini Golf Space 3D. It’s the same simple gameplay that we fell in love with in the original, but now you get spectacular views
Kyocera E6710 Torque passes through FCC en route to Sprint
Posted Jan 14 2013 by Scott Webster in Carrier News, Handset News, Hot Rumors A Kyocera E6710 ‘Torque’ recently passed through the FCC, tipping one of Sprint’s next 4G LTE smartphones. Details thus far are somewhat scarce, but are reported to include NFC, a pair of cameras, and an overall rugged design. Looking at the photo, the Torque appears to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and offer a display with a resolution in the vicinity of 800 x 480 pixels.Kyocera models are typically
Tapatalk HD Leaves Beta, Is On One-Day Only Sale For $0.99 In The Play Store
Back in late December, Tapatalk HD beta left the forum-only download arrangement and made its way into the Play Store as a free download. Now, the beta period has ended, the aforementioned freebie is no more, and the first stable client is available. For those who may not be familiar with Tapatalk, it's essentially a way to natively interact with many forums from your Android device. This prevents you from having to deal with the cumbersome (and not-touch-friendly) interface of most message
Mark Zuckerberg And Co. Are Allegedly Set To Release The New Facebook Phone This Week
Forgive us if you have heard this before— but rumor has it that Facebook is all set to introduce its all-new smartphone at a special event sometime this week. According to MG Siegler of TechCrunch, it is unknown if the new smartphone is custom built or an operating system built to run on another manufacturer’s hardware (probably HTC), but he does have a significant hunch on what consumers could probably see in this smartphone. The most obvious likelihood is that the new Facebook phone
From the mail bag: Is Android affected by the recent Java security issues?
Russ8611 writes, Hello Androidcentral! I was just curious if any of you guys feel like reporting on the Java vulnerability and let us know how it affects Android as a platform. I know most people say they don't need Java on their computers, but isn't Java needed by Android, especially by developers? Thanks!!!That's a nasty mess, isn't it?Java means a few different things, depending on how you're talking about it. The Java that's in the news with a heck of an exploit floating around is the Java
Sony shows off Xperia Z and ZL, we’re impressed
Sony has just announced the latest additions to their Xperia line, the Xperia Z and ZL. We expected an Android-related announcement of some kind from them, and they didn’t waste any time in showing off their latest creations. Sony isn’t pulling any punches this year, as both devices are packed with great specs and a few new features. Let’s take a look. Both devices are bringing almost identical specs to the table, which is expected with the “Z” and “ZL” nomenclature. Both of them
Vizio returns to Android smartphones with pair of Chinese models
Vizio today announced a return to the Android smartphone space, unveiling a pair of handsets bound for China. On one hand you have the upper-echelon stuff in the 5-inch 1080p device with a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, and 2GB RAM. On the other, you have a 4.7-inch model with a dual-core 1.2GHz Mediatek CPU and 1GB RAM.We’ve yet to see these two in person, however the early impressions seem rather positive. The team at The Verge has some glowing words for the two, calling the 4.7-inch
ASUS announces $149 MeMO Pad
ASUS has announced a 7-inch budget Android tablet, dubbed the MeMO Pad. At first glance it looks, physically, a bit like the Nexus 7, but this guy's definitely lacking the hardware department by comparison. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though, as it's targeted at emerging markets, where price is more important than power. The MeMO Pad seems to fit that bill with a $149 listing for the lowest storage option. The MeMO Pad is running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a paltry 1024x600 resolution.
Velocity announces Cruz D610 and Q610, possibly their first tablets that aren’t mediocre
We’ve always known Velocity Cruz tablets to be.. well, certainly not the best. Outdated specs and poor build quality have haunted Velocity for years, but it appears that they’re catching up to the curve with their latest announcement. Meet the Cruz D610, pictured above. It’s packing a dual-core ARM processor of unknown clock speed, a 10-inch display, and Android 4.1. Obviously these aren’t the latest and greatest, but we’re just happy to see a Cruz tablet that isn’t running

$55 Jelly Bean Android Mini PC RK3066 spotted at CES 2013
A few weeks ago we showed you the Mini MK802 Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich computer – basically a dongle that can be hooked up to a display and transformed into an Android computer. But its creator has other similar tricks up its sleeves. The Mini RC RC3066 is a newer Android computer that works pretty much like the MK802, and the product has been spotted at CES 2013.The device packs quite a punch under the hood: 1.6GHz dual-core Cortex A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage, microSD
Use the Nexus 10 to simulate almost any Android device while testing your app
We've all heard the stories that say it's impossible to develop for Android because of all the different possible screen sizes and resolutions. The flip side is that the way Android development is done, most of the time that doesn't really matter. I'm able to string together an Android application, but I'm no serious app developer, so I'm guessing the reality lies somewhere in the middle -- having a selection of screen sizes and resolutions to test on can;t be a bad thing. If you have a Nexus
Photo Sphere: Coming to a non-Nexus near you in 2013?
So much is a given in the smartphone business. Another product cycle begins, and we'll see new hardware. Refined software. Improved user interfaces. It'll happen, just like clockwork. Those are the broad strokes, though. It's tough to nail down individual features. One of the items we're very much hoping to see adopted this year is Photo Sphere, the 360-degree (more or less) panorama feature that Google added to Android 4.2 on the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. It's not just a matter of Samsung or
Zavers offers real-time coupon and rewards redemption through Google Wallet
Google has ushered in the end of days for the bulging wallet with Google Wallet. But even if the platform supported cashless purchases, tickets and discount coupons all under one account, the system has, so far, not provided a unified service to handle all of these. But since Google’s acquisition of Zave in 2011, the company had been working on a new targeted digital-coupon service that provides real-time data and updates to both consumer and retailer. It sounds like “savers” and the new

ZTE Plans On Making Major Splash For 2013 By Introducing More Devices On American Wireless Carriers
Hot off the heels of an impressive showing at CES this week, ZTE is poised to make a major mark on American consumers this year. CNet reports that carrier executives have not only been impressed with flagship devices like the Grand S smartphone, but the same executives have been encouraged by the direction of the company and are even saying “show me more“. Additionally, ZTE’s head of North American business Lixin Cheng highlights that when seeing the new concepts and devices, carrier
Dual SIM Philips W8355 coming soon with 5.3-inch screen and Android 4.0 ICS
Despite being a “premium” brand name in the tech world, having annual revenue in the order of tens of billions of dollars and an effective of worldwide employees of over 100,000 people, Philips has never been what you’d call Android-friendly.We’ve only seen a couple of low-end phones and tablets from the Dutch-based multinational electronics company over the years (and we do mean low-end), as well as one or two media players that are as fashionable now as crocs. But as tough as trying to
Sony to be the Apple of Android smartphones, do away with entry-level handsets?
Since companies such as Samsung, LG and Motorola – to name just a few of the Android device makers we expect hot new products this year – decided not to announce any new Android smartphone and/or tablet this past week, Sony had a chance to shine at CES 2013.The company unveiled its new flagship device, the Xperia Z, and its cheaper alter ego, the Xperia ZL, and these products are expected to hit stores in the coming months, well ahead of every other 2013 flagship handset from Sony’s main

AT&T picks up the Lenovo IdeaTab A2107
AT&T today announced that it'll carry the horribly named Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 Android tablet for $199. That's without a contract, by the way, which tells you someone's really trying to move these things. We took a look at the A2107 back at the IFA conference in the fall of 2012, and note that, well, it's a low-resolution (1024x600) 7-inch tablet that has full access to Google Play. This one's still running Android 4.0, which is kind of ridiculous when you think about it going up against the
Hands on with Qualcomm Vuforia Augmented Reality based apps [Video]
Last year I had a chance to see what Qualcomm Vuforia was doing with augmented reality, and I was so impressed that I had to see where things are 12 months later. To refresh your memory, Vuforia was created by Qualcomm for developers that want to utilize augmented reality in their apps. Things are going pretty well as there are over 2,500 apps available (Android and iOS) from developers in 130 countries, and there are over 40,000 registered developers. Last year we saw an app from Sesame
Hands on with the nabi Jr. Android tablet for toddlers [Video]
Late last year Fuhu announced the nabi Jr. tablet for toddlers. This one is the little brother (or sister) to the nabi 2. It sports a 5-inch (800 x 480) display, a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, a rotating camera lens, 4GB/16GB of storage, matching stylus, microSD, and Fuhu’s own UI built around Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It will be priced at $99 for the 4GB version and $129 for the 16GB version. I had a chance to play with it at CES, and I am not usually impressed with kids tablets, but
Jelly Bean still rolling out to Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, 7" model now joins the fun
The Jelly Bean (Android 4,1,1) update for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 that started back in early December is still rolling out across the globe, and users of the 7-inch model in the Americas are now reporting an OTA as well.Early in the fall of 2012 we saw an update roadmap from Samsung that included the Tab 2, so we shouldn't be surprised that it's here. We have no idea of the mechanics behind Samsung's update schedule, but we hope that the rest of the world will see the Jelly Bean update
Hands on with the latest wireless charging technologies from the Alliance For Wireless Power [Video]
A couple of days ago we reported on new wireless technologies from the Alliance For Wireless Power (A4WP). Wireless charging isn’t anything new, but one thing we can all agree on is that it hasn’t been widely adopted. Actually there is second thing we can agree on and that’s that we really want it. The problem is there really hasn’t been a standard and current pads are too clunky.

After Eight Months Of Silence, IntoNow Gets Bumped Up To Version 2.0
It's been quite a while since we've heard anything from the video-identifying application IntoNow, but out of nowhere the Yahoo!-owned app was bumped up to v2.0 late yesterday evening. The update brings several new features, which mostly focus on the social aspect of the app:What's in this version:- Capture and caption your favorite "Did you see that" moments with Capit – instantly create pictures from your TV, add a caption and/or comment, and share with your friends.- Newsfeed update –
Help improve weather prediction with mPing
Here's a cool little crowd-sourced project from the National Severe Storms Laboratory and the University of Oklahoma. (Boomer Sooner!) The "Precipitation Near the Ground" project (aka W-PING) uses reports from civilians (that's you and me) to match against what radar sees. And as noted in the app description, radar doesn't see too well near the ground at long distances, and those snazzy automated sensors that can tell the difference between snow and rain and some dude spitting in the gutter are
King's Bounty: Legion Comes To Android, Brings Turn-Based Fantasy Strategy Along With It
Turn based fantasy games have seen a bit of a resurgence recently, no doubt partly because it's easier to design a touchscreen UI where the action takes place in a menu rather than in wielding a sword. To wit: King's Bounty: Legion. This title gives players a set of characters to command in combat versus an enemy squad to conquer the game board. The game has some pretty strong creative ties to Heroes of Might and Magic, as the man who designed the original Might and Magic, as well as the
Android 4.2.2 shows up on Nexus 4 in Brazil?
Take with a pinch of salt, but a Brazilian site may have just produced the first evidence that Android 4.2.2 is about to be released. Here’s the story – Adrenaline.com.br came up with two pictures of a Nexus 4 device that was allegedly manufactured in Brazil and runs Android 4.2.2. According to the site, LG has begun manufacturing Google devices in Brazil on January 5, which means that the phone in the photographs could be one of the first to leave the assembly line. LG has a factory that
Every Android Central CES video in one convenient post
As you might have noticed, CES 2013 is just about over for us. It's debatable whether it packed the same punch as in previous years, but to my eyes (and sore feet), there's no doubt that there was more than enough Android content to cover. As we all hop on airplanes and head back home, it's time to start looking back on the mayhem in Vegas. Four reporters. Countless stories. (Well, OK. You can count them all at our CES page if you want.) More photos than we know what to do with. And then, of
Archos 97 Platinum and 80 Platinum hands on
One of the things I was most excited to see at this year's CES was Archos' 97 Titanium, the 9.7-inch Android tablet introduced by Archos late last year. Its stunning Retina-quality 2048 x 1536 display is one of the best on any Android tablet, and its nearly-identical-to-the-iPad design will almost certainly grab the eyes of consumers and lawyers alike. Much to my surprise, what I found was a new line of Archos tablets, the Platinum series, one step above the still-fresh Titanium. ?On hand
Archos 101 Titanium hands-on (updated with official announcement)
Archos brought a slew of tablets to its CES booth this year, and we managed to get our hands on the lot of them. Here's the 101 Titanium, a distant cousin of the 101XS that we reviewed earlier this year. This iteration is part of Archos' Elements line, and therefore receives some of the goodies associated with the brand, such as a much-improved build quality and finish. This thing is solid, much more so than the 101XS, though fails to match the ultra-premium look and feel of the 97 Titanium
Angry Birds Space updated with 'Pig Dipper' levels
Angry Birds Space gets a content update this afternoon. The Pig Dipper update brings 30 new aquatic-themed levels to the popular game, extending its life and keeping players hooked like only Rovio can. The new levels require a bit of a strategy change, as you're now fighting gravity and buoyancy at the same time. You can have a crack at the new levels by updating via the Google Play app on your phone or tablet, or if you haven't been sucked into this one yet and want to give it a try, use the
Chrome Beta channel now available for Android
Good news everyone! The Chrome Beta channel for Android kicks off today with version 25.0.1364.8. Like the Beta channel for the computer, it's a preview of features and fixes that has already passed the development channel and is running through the final testing before it makes its way into the final version. That means it's a great way to try out things that may be broken, but still allow the software to work as a whole. Today's release comes with the following bugs:Performance is sluggish,
